Pearl: Great Advice

Today my inspiration is drawn from a little piece of advice given to me by a recruitment manager at a major PR firm. Her advice was simple: ask or you will never receive.

I heard this advice and immediately clammed up. I did not want to be seen as too demanding or too forward. I feared I would come off as being too harsh - that was the last thing I wanted. As a person whose biggest fear in life is rejection this idea of simply asking for the things I wanted was hard to swallow - I did not want to hear no, better yet settle because I was told no.

I gave it a try anyways, knowing that I needed to push myself out of my comfort zone.

A few things started to happen when I put this bit of advice into action. First, I began to feel more confident in my ability to ask for what I wanted. It was hard at first, but I found a way to ask that showed my own personality instead of sounding demanding. Second, I have been shown respect time and time again because I came knowing what I wanted and stood up for myself. Finally, I have had so many doors open and connections made because of me simply asking.

The advice is worth repeating: ask or you will never receive. Find a way to incorporate your own voice and start asking for the things you want in life. You owe it to yourself and your future.

Pearl: Being Your Own Cheerleader

I have always been a firm believer in being your own personal cheerleader.

This motto has taken me through most of my adult years. Sometimes it is hard to constantly stay positive, but that is typically when I try to find an inspirational quote for the week and post it on my mirror at home.

Today's "pearl" holds a lot of meaning for me. The very core of me wants things to happen and happen now. I don't want to wait for anything; I can be impatient. I have learned that I cannot be this way when pursuing my dreams (and doing PR work). It takes time and nothing happens over night. Months and sometimes years of hard work are put into seeing your dreams come into fruition (ie completing your college degree, buying a home, having a family, landing your client a dream spot on tv). It all takes time. And patience.

So, future PR pro. Learn to be your own cheerleader, because in the end you will be the biggest push to accomplish the goals you set out to fulfill!

Welcome to my new blog!

Pearls, Curls & A PR Girl: Musings on Life & PR is meant to be a place where I can share my ideas, not only on PR, but also on fashion, sorority and life beyond college, including the job/internship search. My goals for Pearls & Curls are simple. I want to teach about public relations and share the next adventures as I move on from my college years.

Starting a blog has been something I have wanted to do for a while; I just didn't have a clue what to write about. I couldn't find my niche. It dawned on me one night - I should be writing about what I love! What exactly is that? PR and all things girly. It seemed like the perfect choice. All I had to do was add my own "Erin" flair and voilĂ  a new blog was created!

Why Pearls, Curls & a PR Girl? I mulled over the perfect name for my new blog for a few days. It wasn't until I was curling my hair for work that the name struck me. As I looked in the mirror, I saw a future PR pro who just happened to be wearing pearls with curled hair! It seemed right and so it stuck.

Over the next week I will be establishing my different sections/pages. Things to look forward to: interview tips, cover/resume letter tips, personal branding, thoughts on social media, PR terminology, and a fun little section I will be calling "Pearls of PR" (pearls are little inspirational quotes and advice for aspiring PR pro's - because well, we all need a little inspiration every once in a while). I will also be starting a section called Girl & Book - must reads for every PR girl!

I hope that you take the time to comment and leave your thoughts!
